Step By Step Homemade Scented Candles

Finding out how to make scented candles is rather simple, though actually making them involves practice and skill to get the scent the right mix for the amount of wax you are using.

Making scented candles can be as much an art as it is a science. There are steps that need to be followed, but because essential oils vary with the intensity of their total scents, it involves experience to gauge the concentrations and adjust accordingly.

The essential equipment needed are: a double boiler, a mold and a way to melt the wax (like stove top). You will also need wax, wicks and essential oils. Molds really are optional for some types of candles are made without the use of molds, or you could even use containers or jars to pour the wax into.

The steps are very simple. Fill the bottom pot of the double boiler with water, and put it on to boil. Place your wax in the top pot of the double boiler. You can purchase wax in flakes or block form. It is much easier with wax flakes, as you will need to cut pieces off of the blocks. When you have enough wax in the top pot, immerse it within the water to melt the wax.

While waiting for the wax to melt, prepare your molds if you are using them. Set the wick for each candle, you do this before you have poured the wax. When the wax has melted which is hot and is melted into liquid you can then take it off of the heat.

This is actually the part when you mix in the oils for fragrance. Pour in the correct amount, stir quickly but thoroughly after which you can begin to pour the wax into your molds. If the wax cools too much and is no longer very fluid just place it back on a lower heat, being careful not to cause the essential oils to evaporate too much.

Pour the hot wax very slowly into the hole at the top of the molds. Slow pouring aids in eliminating air bubbles that may ruin the finished product, and this also minimizes wick movement to make sure that it comes out as planned. Set your candle aside to cool, when the wax is cool and has set, you are able to extract your candle.

Candle making can be a hobby that you can turn into a lucrative business. Even if you are new to this craft homemade candles can be something that you can create for gifts, fun, or even sell them.
